In the United States, new reports indicate that the laundry care industry may be topping the 10-billion-dollar mark each year, according to PackagedFacts.

So, what to do when your favorite laundry buddy just offers soapy promises? According to Consumer Reports, you need to figure out what are your family’s needs at the time of doing your laundry, as no detergent is truly a cure-all for most clothing cleaning tasks.

For example, there are laundry detergents that are better at stain fighting and other better at removing odors. There also others that promise color protection and lack the power to keep your clothes clean.

So the question still lingers: What is the best choice for your family?

TV personality and clothing designer Tim Gunn recently offered some suggestions that you may like.

First, you must understand the types of laundry detergents currently available in the industry. Some are called “high-efficient,” that promise the use of less product per load, “high performance” ones that claim to remove odors, and “hypoallergenic” ones that use less harsh chemicals and even contain natural ingredients.

According to his research published in Consumer Reports magazine, he noticed that brands such as Seventh Generation and Kirkland Signature, that claim to work in any type of laundry machines, performed better in front loading ones.

Those brands that promise you that you will spend less than a dollar per every load that you wash, sometimes removed odors but the stains. An example of these are Win High Performance Sport Detergent, TotalCare and 2X Ultra, both from Tide.

Not all hypoallergenic detergents are what they seem to be. For example, the designer says that brands such as Seventh Generation Natural Powdered HE and Simplicity Hypoallergenic Non-Toxic 2X are not regulated by Federal standards and all of these products contained warnings on their labels, so even these can cause eye and skin irritations.

This shows that even going green in your laundry room also comes at a cost.

The next time you are looking to improve your quality of life in your laundry room, read the labels of all the products before buying them and see if they match their promises with their price tag.
